Here I sit. Waiting, waiting to get my hair cut for the first time since the STAY AT HOME Directive was issued. And no, it’s not a Salon. It’s a Barbershop. And while they do stylist stuff here, the door still says Barbershop – red and white striped pole and all. Barbara, my barber, has been cutting my hair here for 20 years, give or take.
So why would I wait with three others ahead of me? Because I need a haircut! Boy do I need a haircut. I can usually go about three weeks before I begin to look bushy. It’s been much longer – quarantined.
For those who don’t know me, I’m bald. That is to say, I have no hair on the top of my head except for a few hairs right in the front, a rooster. However, the hair on the side and back of my head is thick.
After the first month inside, I was trimming my mustache one night with a small beard trimmer and decided to trim my sideburns as well. When I finished they looked better, notice how I avoided the word good.
Now being better, I decided to just be bold and go forth. So I reached behind me grabbed a handful and started.
It felt good. And since I had a guard on the trimmer, I figured I couldn’t do too bad. So, I kept cutting until I thought it would at least look even.
Then after a quick shower, I ran my brush through it, brushing it all back as normal. It felt pretty good. Then I took my wife Barbara’s large hand mirror, turned around with my back to the wall mirror and looked.
Let me remind you I had a guard on the trimmer and there would have been no way I could have gapped it. But, on the left side, there was a hole. No way it could have happened. But it did!
Oh well, no one was going to see it except my daughter and wife. I wear a hat most of the time anyway.
Today, once again, it is so long I can grab a handful – even make a short ponytail.
Although we were headed somewhere else when we left home, we drove by the barbershop and noticed that not too many people were waiting. We stopped.
Agreeing, I needed a haircut more than we needed to go to our original destination, I’m now sitting here waiting …
My turn!!!
Oh what a difference. What a feeling. There is nothing like it. And I look so much better now … well at least my hair does.
Just Pondering.
